Depends on what 'size' and price you are looking for... The Passat and Jetta wagons are nice units, as are the hot hatches, especially with the 'torque' kit upgrades (chip and IC). My personal favorites in the marble-motors are the Merc 320 you mention, and the 06-07 Toureg v10tdi. Ex LT1Q and multiple q owner Dupree has one, and it's monstrous torque profile is nothing short of phenomenal. What VW doesn't tell you is that this machine is a Phaeton with a SUV body. And it will tow anything anywhere with it's 330hp/553lb-ft. I just brokered a fully loaded 2007 (with nav) 70kmiles for ~30KUSD in mint condition a couple months ago. I drove it for 10 days before delivery, and IMHO it's the best sleeper in the euro-deisel choices.
It's worthy of a drive just to baseline the SUV choices (incl Q7, X5, and ceyenne), as the swell of torque easily motivates as fast as my Supercharged LC, without my dinosaur-killing gas mileage. 20mpg stop light races, and it will take just about any driver that isn't fully revved, it has that much torque off the line... And for those so addicted, ABT sells a chipset that puts the torque into the 700lb-ft range. The market has faltered on them due to the bad press the 04my got for it's electrical issues. IIRC II the 07 doesn't use the eurea (the diesel dynosaur pee) either...
Cheers
SJ

I'm thinking of turbo-diesel-fying my LR Disco, but that's a different
story...
