The vent is pretty critical. I've seen at least a half dozen C4 cars in
junkyards that were there because the battery either started a fire,
exploded, or both. If your voltage regulator fails and you overcharge the
battery for a while, the vent will help minimize the risk of having an
acid-filled, hydrogen fueled bomb under your back seat.
