Nothing is the same. The 3.0 was a completely new engine. The 3.0 is 
actually more similar to the newer engines.

I was going to try some new plugs but the 3.0 also has failure-prone coils 
similar to the 1.8t coils so they may also need changed. Plugs would be a 
good first step though.
 
I would consider getting a 2.8 if power isn't a great concern. The 3.0 is 
pretty snappy performance wise. It's also kind of rough and rattles on 
startup from the hydraulic cam timing adjusters.
