Dunno about the Audi 1.9TDI, but my Jetta 1.9TDI BEW uses a filter  
cartridge that goes in a top-loading can, just the element, the metal  
part stays with the car when you change the filter. I have no idea how  
the 1.8T works, but my Jetta filter would not even come close to  
working on the various Audi engines I've owned: MC, 7A, AAN, etc.
