I have used and owned a lot of different auto GPS units. My favorites have always been the Garmin products. Their website makes it very easy for you to select and compare features to make an informed decision.
However, one VERY important (to me) thing I've found, is the mount. There are several different mount styles on the Garmins. The one to have has the electrical (and traffic) contacts built into the mount itself, allowing you to quickly snap the unit in and out of the mount without messing around with plugging and unplugging the power cord. To me, this is a must have, as it makes removal and tucking the unit into your glovebox a snap. This is only found on a select few of their models.
This mount is used on (all are nuvi models):
750
755T
760
765T
770
775T
780
785T
Some of the above listed models are outdated, but you can go to their website to poke around and decide on features. Every one of these models is traffic capable, and this is why it uses the preferred mount.
As a side note, I own and have really enjoyed the 760. This is a discontinued model, and I bought my first one 2+ years ago. A while back, I noticed on Ebay that there are numerous authorized dealers of factory remanufactured units. A factory reconditioned 760 can be had for about $175, complete with traffic receiver to your door. I thought this was a very attractive price for what the 760 has to offer. I bought one of the factory reconditioned 760s on Ebay, and it is perfect. A lot of bang for the buck, if you are interested in going this route... and the 760 is a feature loaded unit.
HTH,
Dave

I agree with the cell phone thing for certain cases, and the XMotion
Drive app for iPhone is exceptional. The caveat is if you get a call
(even if you don't answer) near a turn you may miss a beat.
That said, I belive Bob to be looking for something with a larger
screen. I've been looking a bit too and believe I would buy the most
expensive TomTom I could afford at the time.
