I too am a big fan of Tom Tom ... picked up a 630S on "Black Friday" last
year. I was looking for the spoken street names and such, and I must say I
was a more than a bit disappointed with the mispronunciations of even common
names. I was talking to my BiL, who has the Sprint Hero (HTC H/W running
Android S/W), he had similar complaints.
Last year I wanted to get my mother a GPS for Christmas. She still does a
lot of driving on her own, and I thought it would be good for her to have
something that could help if she happened to get lost or want to go
somewhere unfamiliar. Last year I got a Sony NavMan U (I think) with speech
synthesis ... which I got for less than $100. Now that I've heard the Tom
Tom I wish I had bought myself another NavMan! I tested it out before
giving it to her; I found that it did a pretty good job of quickly finding a
route, and the spoken street names were very good. If you happen to choose
a different route it would recomputed quickly. I don't remember seeing the
Sony units recently, but if you do happen to find one give it a shot.

I like the TomTom interface. It may not be the most sophisticated, nor the
most customizable, but it's ready to go out of the box. This is nice when
you don't use it on a regular basis.
