As someone who takes car of crash victims daily and with two small children of my own.  I'd strongly recommend keeping them in a 5 point restraint as long as size and weight allow.  Once they cross the 40 pound mark then backed booster as long as size allows and finally not graduating from boosters until "they are at least 58 inches tall, have a sitting height of 29 inches and weigh 80 pounds" (CDC reference).
For what it's worth my girls ride in recaros.
