That's unusual and you're lucky.
Even though making a sidewinder is just about as easy as a 'regular' key
labor wise, even most locksmiths still charge a premium possibly because
they know dealers screw you for it too (and IME key copies come with a free
lecture about "how expensive the equipment was so that's why they have to
charge you $40 to cut the key").
Agreed VW blanks are fine and probably easier to find ("HAA" is the key
blank code I believe...)
