Remember, there is nothing that needs to protrude 'forward' from the I5.
Even using a spark arrester filter and the tightest bends possible on the
water pump, the LT1 was almost 6 inches longer than the I5 in "installed"
trim, IIRC, the adapter added less than 2 inches. Btmeasuredt, btdt. See
the linky, we got it done, but I chuckle that our initial thoughts were
similar to yours. A lot of engineering to bend that LT1Q into the I5 spot.
I know the VR6 is shorter, and I know the ABZ motor is almost identical in
'installed' length, after helping stuff one of those into a 1991 90cq last
night.
Cheers

Don't forget that in this application the AAN would have many of those
problems too, including the trans adaptor. Engine to engine, nothing added
to them, I'm fairly sure that the AAN is longer.

Nope, I know that's not true, the SBC is longer overall than the I5 (read:
it's not just the block, it's the trans adapter, the water pump, and the air
intake to make it "LOA" much longer in reality)... As one of the founding
members of the LT1Q project, you can see some of the issues here:

Yeah, a SBC is shorter than a AAN in height an length.
