Regarding:
"As my car is just about to turn 100K, I think I may need a wheel
bearing.....I've heard a consistent whirr, whirr, whirr from the front end
for awhile, and it seems to disappear under tire noise at speed. Recently
upon slowing down, there has been a slight whoop, whoop, whoop instead of
the whirr..."
I had a growl that I thought was tread noise from the front tires. Put on
new tires...growl was unchanged. The alignment mechanic found the bad
bearing by listening through a screwdriver, even though the wheel still felt
snug, turned smoothly, and no significant play from a mounted rim. Not even
any indication from tread wear.
100K is time to replace the front wheel bearings. Do it.
