My wife drives our 05.5 Passat 4-Motion GLX Wagon (bought 2 years ago with
around 39k on the clock, now has around 52k). So far its been a great car.
Needed an alternator at 45k (350 bucks), a MFTS which caused a warm start
issue around the same time, and currently the door switch that controls the
headlight warning buzzer is not functioning, which is annoying but
apparently common. Its pricey to fix and my wife doesn't forget to turn the
lights off, so it hasn't been an issue. I leave them on sometimes if I
drive it as I park in a garage and need to use the lights during daylight
hours. The only other issue is that the way the rub strip is designed on
the doors causes the front edge to peel up and break on the rear doors. Its
cosmetic yes, but quoted at $150 per trim strip to replace and there is no
guarantee it won't happen again! Another issue is that fuel economy is
woeful at 23 highway/16 city.
Other than that, have to disagree with Jeff and say that it is S L O W after
driving a chipped ur-S and the drive by wire automatic feel SUCKS! It does
however have phenomenal road manners on the highway and with proper snows is
terrific in the white stuff. Comfy seats for long drives, decent "Monsoon"
stereo and tons of cargo/rear passenger space, more than the s6 avant in
fact. Also, the square design of the doors allows for easy entry with a 2
year old, ask me how I know....
A good car if you find one that is in good repair.
