[s-cars] CV Joint Gone Bad?

Maybe I missed the question but it sounds like you've already determined what you believe to be the problem. Without hearing it it's hard to call your assessment into question but the only other possibilities would be some sort of low speed tire rub, and I wouldn't rule out by any means the possibility of early wheel bearing failure/dryness. Is there any rotational aspect or clicking related to the grinding noise. I'd say that would lead me more in the direction of the CV. Otherwise have a good look @ the bearing too. Good Luck.

At low speed and near full lock, I'm getting a grinding noise from the left
CV joint. Quick inspection shows no torn boot or spilled grease. I'm
assuming the CV joint is going and requires replacement.

I'm planning on replacing the whole axle - $100 from online supplier which
is probably the cheapest option. In fact I think I'll change both just
because - car is 15 years old and the axles are the originals.
