[s-cars] dent in G4 crankshaft position sensor

Car wouldn't start after work on Wednesday evening. Cranked fine but didn't
fire at all. Pulled codes and just got a 2111 (which I was expecting with a
non-running engine.) No difference with starting fluid-not the slightest
hint of ignition.

Paid $120.01 to have it flatbeded 13 miles home on Thursday. Plus the
driver earned a $20 tip for carefully unloading right into my garage.

Decided to pull the G28 engine speed sensor (since I didn't have any other
codes besides 2111) and its neighbor the G4 crankshaft position sensor for
inspection. Low and behold the G4 sensor (the one closer to the front of
the car) has a small dent in the end of its metal can! Presumably a foreign
object must have gotten in between the flywheel and sensor there to cause
that. piece of gravel? Piece of ice? (Drove through rain all day Saturday,
got home to freezing temperatures Saturday night, so I suppose ice in the
bell housing is a possibility.) Anybody have any other ideas?

Both the G4 and G28 checked on out OK for resistance (~980 ohms between
terminals 1 & 2).

In the morning I'll go to inspect to make sure the timing pin on the
flywheel is still in place. If all looks OK there I'll replace the G4 and
see if that fixes things.

I'm also going to reread Dave F.'s excellent write-up on these sensors.

Do I understand correctly that the only difference between these two sensors
is the color of the connector?

P.S. My wife sent me a link to a 2007 Mazdaspeed6 for sale. I guess she's
hinting its time I got a newer car. I better get the urS6 fixed quick! Or
maybe I *should* go car shopping!
