[s-cars] In Search of a 6-Speed Allroad

I echo all the comments about the Allroad, regarding the handling compared
to the UrS cars in stock form.
And the 6spd being more involvement and in my feeble mind a better vehicle
than the Tip.
So I also thought I'd just get used to driving the AR!
So I bought a 2002 6 speed Allroad! Got a pretty good price, negotiated a TB
job into the price!
I thought I'd just get used to it after I totaled my S6A with RS2 Turbo, EM,
injectors, MAF and IA software.
With a rebuilt pretty much stock suspension. NO WAY unless you are brain
dead!
So there's an incredible amount of body roll, no problem ya just put on the
Hocksis sway bars $400, plus install. CHEAP!
The lifetime warranty on the Hocksis only applies to original purchaser from
what I can see, and it is required to be installed by a authorized mechanic
(????) for their warranty to be in effect. There's been some breakage
reported in the AR forum.
It sits pretty high, creating more body roll! The fix for that is the 402
mod, that is a VAG change you can drop (or increase) the height of the
entire car how much you want to a degree, and still have the height
adjustment positions from the cockpit. $125 or free if you have a VAG!
Either way CHEAP!
The KO3 turbos fail no problem the fix for that is the KO4s, best price I've
seen is $2200 for just the turbos.
Then there are all the associated hoses and bi-pipes that some say you have
to have? Another $1000 to be safe!
To go full blown KO4s the ICs and their shrouds, fueling, and software are
the fix.
Install, the jury's out on that but if it's true you have to remove the
engine to install.
10 hours min. in the hands of a competent wrench.
I casually asked a shop in the PDX area what it costs to go full on
KO4..wait for it..$10-14,000 retail.
You can see that I haven't said anything about the airbags, Arnott Gen Is,
are $300 +- per corner, for the fronts which are the normal repair, plus
install. In my mind I'll do the Gen IIs and shocks at the same time, ya
can't do just one corner, but some say shocks aren't necc.
Oh did you put on the Hocksis sway bar? It probably has to be removed to
install the rear airbags if you go that route, but even if you didn't you
can't adjust the alignment with it in place, so if you're thinking about the
rear suspension..consider that!
6speed, Hell at some times I can't tell if the clutch is engaged or not,
there's just no feel to it!
The stock clutch is so whimpy, the fix is the RS4 clutch and PP, not sure
yet if it uses a different flywheel or not?
Most of the guys that bump up HP on their tip cars go to something like
2Bennett torque converter, because the stock TC can't handle increased HP
very well
The AR is a pretty comfortable car, with enough bells and whistles to please
any UrS owner!
OK so the 6 spd AR in stock form is a soccer mom station wagon!
Go to the AR forum on quattroworld, find Bruce M, he has a dealer license
deals a lot of the ARs, has 6spds or 6MTs as they like to call them.
If you decide to go Tip, reserve the right to have a full diagnostic on it!
There doesn't seem to be a lot of conversation in their forum on coils like
there is on UrS forum, so I'd put that out of your mind.
Lots of the AR guys are all pumped up to get the third seat, after my rear
end accident no way I'd EVER put my worst enemy in the back of a S6A or a
AR!
Go for it, but don't think you're going to get ANYTHING like a URS6 Avant.

I picked up a 2005 allroad 6-spd with RNS-E in Sept. As others have stated,
the stock suspension is absolutely horrible when you're used to the UrS6
with Eibachs & Bilsteins. Think '70s Cadillac/Buick type handling. But you
get used to it. Supposedly the Hotchkiss sway bar kit does a lot to fix
that, as does the Arnott Gen II airbags and Bilstein shock kit.
As for the automatic, for me it's manual or nothing. If I had to spend an
hour+ commuting everyday through stop and go traffic then I could understand
an automatic, but personally I would get another job or take the bus before
getting an automatic. It's a sense of involvement for me. I don't care how
good the latest alphabet soup autos are, or whether they're faster than a
manual. The driver is that much more removed from the equation and every
one of them that I've driven bore me to death after 10 minutes.
And if you get an automatic allroad it's only a question of when, not if,
you will have an expensive repair waiting for you. The torque converters
will fail, no if, and, or buts.
