Tom,

There have been some reports of electrical contact cleaner sprayed in  
the crevices without disassembly of the steering have restored  
function, but I hold little confidence in the practice.  Replacement  
stalk for the headlights will get you new turn signal lever and cruise  
control along with the on-off/flash  switch.  It requires removal of  
the air bag and steering wheel for access, but then is simple R/R.   
The genuine Audi part is priced close to the aftermarket switches, so  
genuinevwaudiparts.com, bimmerparts.com or autohausaz.com had best  
prices last check I made.

The FAQ on Quattroworld is sure to have some DIY hints for the  
procedure, or steering wheel removal at least.
