[s-cars] ping vs. rattle

I don't have anything in terms of a ping at idle, and I just checked my oil and it was a quart low, so o'm wondering if it wasn't just valve clatter from that...... We'll see tomorrow...

That was exactly my case. No vapor. It was fire across the gap from 4 to
5, pinging at idle w/no load, etc, etc...the key question though is root
cause. That will probably be different in each case depending on level
of molestation. Mine was heartily molested in its previous life.

that's the normal tell tale HG sign but if Dave says the AAN can blow

without hitting water / oil journals then I believe it and you
potentially
wouldn't see any of the usual contaminated coolant/oil or excess steam
out
the tailpipe etc.  which are the "classic" tell-tale symptoms.
