There is little to no danger I am aware of.  Sellers commonly provide the vin so interested parties can have the history checked.

Subject: [s-cars] VIN number

I know that this is off topic for Urs cars, but hope no one is offended.  I
am selling my one owner 97 GTS Viper on Craig's list.  I have an interested
party in California, who is asking for the VIN number.  Is there any risk in
giving out the VIN.  My concern is someone using it to rebuild a wreck using
my number.  Comments appreciated.
