yes this can be done, and I am sure it has been BUT I wouldn't advise it as 
you won't get a good seal 
between the rings and cylinder walls if the cylinder walls haven't been honed.

I am sure you don't want to hear this, but you would be better off to do the 
extra work and hone the cylinders.

I need to replace the rings. Is it possible to remove the pan, remove the
head and do the ring replacements without pulling the engine??

Subject is a 93 S4 (2.2l 5-cyl turbo)
