[s-cars] to rebuild or replace motor, that is the question

I was recently thinking about buying an 03 a4 avant 1.8 and parting out my car to help fund an a4.  but i had a change of heart and think it better to keep my s6 and make it fun again.  looking for advice or guidance as this is a new/big task for me to take on, however I do have ambitious helpers.  car is a 95 S6 with 232,870 miles on it, paint is black and chipping at the fenders.  drivers seat is torn and it could use engine/trans mounts and bushings around.  the engine burns oil, pretty positve it is from the valve seals.  only smokes at idle and start up, no consumption at highway cruising.  also leaking oil, slowly but surely the bottom of motor and subframe and mm hose are consistently wet.  I do not know which is a better and more feasible idea, replace my motor with a used engine or rebuild the engine i have.  if I rebuild, im not sure what all I need to do.  obviously head work, but what about the bottom end?  I hear a few people
claim that the bottom end goes bad at 250k or so?

I have no desire to ever go beyond rs2 power levels, maybe perhaps a gt2871 or the like if it where not rs2.  need to keep my goals affordable at least somewhat.
there is the idea of getting a nice head from 034 and doing what is necessary for bottom end work?

thanks all
