Need more information: "will briefly fire up when he yanks on the starter
cord but then it dies almost immediately"

 

Does it fire up with choke on/off ?

 

Does it die without any operator input?

Or

Operator disengages choke, it dies

or apply throttle, it dies

or engage clutch, it dies

 

And by 'briefly fire up' do we mean the engine accelerates and dies or just
putts a few and dies.
