Re the blue book quoting yes they do use that but KBB is famously biased in favor of insurance companies and car dealerships. Ever notice how silly low private sale and trade-in are and how high the dealer-sale prices are on some cars?  Those are all for the paying KBB customers that keep the lights on... And of course then the system becomes self fulfilling "gee KBB says your car is only worth X, so we do the deal and now that low price goes into the system to reinforce it for the next guy". A further distortion that the dealers and ins cos love is that private sales are often under-reported (not all sales captured) and under-stated (buyers wanting to avoid sales taxes).
