I looked at the V70R for a bit before we bought our Passat 1.8T 4Motion wagon with manual tranny. My mom also drives a V70 2.5T AWD. As a long time Volvo fan, I just couldn't fall in love with the R, even though it looks great on paper.
Pros: Good engine, brakes, and is a good family wagon (hauls more than the passat for sure)
Cons: Turning radius redefines huge. So huge that it can be noticeable during even NON-parallel parking. Literally like driving a suburban.
Suspension seems to be less than completely sorted. Fit and finish of some parts of interior not up to VAG standards. Seemed like more potential for expensive repairs than the passat.
Things to look for: I think you said you want a manual, but for the record there was a switch from 5sp to 6sp auto boxes, with the 6 being far superior. There was also a mid-production haldex update. "instant traction" I believe it was called. Basically pre-loaded the haldex so it activated quicker. I would want both, if I were looking.
I don't know what we will do when the Passat needs to be replaced. There just doesn't seem like much that I would want that would also make a desirable used car from a cost standpoint (particularly with a manual) Like the 535xi- great car, but lots of stuff to go wrong.
