Move on Chicagoans, nothing to see here. Funny stuff when reaching beyond the walls of one's comfort zone, into the world of S car competition. The v70R just doesn't come to my mind, as driveline failures of the 01E are pretty much non-existent, so that's a tough nut to purposely acquire.... I suppose you could argue that O1E 1st gear is an issue, but I know many S car drivers that have been driving with that whine (excuse the pun) for over 100k miles without failure. Having owned a GLH turbo, I could almost forgive the R turning radius of a tandem axle truck, but 30 years later, that as an issue seems to bring a significant chuckle.
I found the 6 speed to be good and well matched, the engine and brakes awesome in the R as well. I too find the suspension somehow 'lost' in it's purpose or intent. IME with yumps and haldex uncoupled, 'composed' isn't a word that comes to mind. The S car may be "Miss Piggy in heels" (tm-me), but she stands well balanced in those heels in all types of weather/roads.
I have driven many of the Allroads, brokered a few, almost pulled the trigger on one, but just didn't get the air suspension. The 6speed and the 2.7tt engine didn't feel well matched, something maybe more hp would solve. It didn't help either that I was in process of working an AllRoad and a 535xi wagon at the same time. To the v10tdi, I put on this forum a few years ago too, if you haven't driven one, you have lost a perspective of what massive torque can do to the soul of a bread and butter SUV. And knocking back Scar-like mileage on road trips to boot. I had almost 3 weeks with one I brokered last year, and you got to the point where you would just race anything next to you for sport. The looks on the faces of those not tuned to the tiny rear corner badge? Priceless.
Many years ago, on these very forums, I predicted once BMW got a firm grasp on the AWD concept, Audi would be in a pickle. That time has come a couple years ago. We can all argue about CAN bus, too many computers to break, etc, but at the end of the day, we will all get dragged into that world, as that's our collective future. The 'other' good news is without the ethynol subsidy, we might even get to drive some darn right awesome diesel offerings from VAG and BMW. Having spent significant time in both, I likes!
In the meantime, whatever your 'price' point, driving the BMW series avants, sure makes me think that someone got the evolution of the Scar avant down much better than the originator.
Cheers all
Scott J
