This sounds quite plausible as I had the IC out a couple of weeks ago to
replace the ignition switch and may have disturbed something.

It's probably not the sender or the gauge.
There's a known problem on S6's that the pin in the aux cluster that carries
the signal to the gauge isn't soldered properly and that connection fails.
I've had to fix it on every S6 I've owned.
You'll need to pull the instrument cluster, remove the aux cluster, and
disassemble it to get access to the circuit board, but it's a free fix from
a parts standpoint.
