>>Avant is way significantly better than the crawl-in-and-suffocate sedan
access.

Yes, having been inside the tank 3 times on my sedan (2 pumps and 1 sender)
I would say you Avant guys have it good.

Of course, I'm just grateful there *is* an access plate in my car. So many
vehicles require dropping to tank to do a simple fuel pump replacement.
(Then there are the California-emissions BMWs with the sealed fuel tank
where you cannot replace the pump--that's just crazy!)

Hopefully someone will have a thought on polarity on the Bosch fuel pump.
Because I couldn't find any markings on mind, I kept the same physical
orientation as the failed VDO pump, but this was wrong. It made noise, but
didn't pump any fuel. Got the car to start with a 12V cordless tool battery
hooked up with alligator clips, thus verifying I needed to reverse polarity.

For me it was easier to cut, splice, solder, and shrink wrap the connections
in the wiring harness rather than dive into the tank again--especially after
just adding 4 gallons back to the tank by gas can. Not sure where the
wiring harness runs on an Avant--might not be quite as accessible.

Jim, hope your pump replacement is going well!

I would not worry about replacing a recently replaced fuel filter.
