[s-cars] Turbo....anyone have a loaner or one for cheap?

If you don't have a flat downpipe flange you could get a faulty reading for your O2 sensor and fail your smog test. I have had my downpipe off and reshaped several times for different turbos and had to resurface the flange for a perfect seal. Eventually I had to buy a new flange. I bought a stainless steel one from 034.
You have to make sure you always use a new gasket and hardware, and you should also check that the nuts on the flange stay tight after the first couple of heat cycles.

That reminds me.  My '92 is not passing smog.  If the cats are visually OK (not melted or broken), can I assume they're still functional?  I took out the downpipe and looked into the cats, and didn't see any damage.  No rattles when I shook them, and the engine revs just fine.

BTW, I had the downpipe out because I was trying to fix an exhaust leak at the flange between the GT2871 turbo and the downpipe.  The downpipe had a gouge in the flange, so I had it resurfaced.  The guy recommended using copper RTV when putting it back together, so I did.  Well, it's still leaking, though from a different side of the flange, and I'm getting frustrated.  Any ideas?

By the way, I've got a K24 in good shape that came out when I installed the GT2871.  Email me if interested.

Clogged cats usually make it very difficult to build rpms in the engine. I
agree with Josh, a lot of times both cats will fail soon after one another-
anything that causes the destruction of one cat will likely destroy the
other one as well, unless you had a hard impact physically on one cat only.

It's usually hard to hear a clogged cat IME, although sometimes you can
hear the substrate rattling around in the case if the material has come
loose.
