Okay gentlemen,

The mystery is over and there has been a solution to my very poorly boosting urS6 avant.  Many thanks to all who have posted suggestions.....I could not have diagnosed this myself without all of you.

Actually, I didn't diagnose this myself. I am very thankful to Dave Dawson and his Garage Mahal, as his knowledge, lift, a spare ECU and many tools were crucial to the diagnosis.  Also many thanks and a Virtual Beer to Mr. Steve Mills, who suggested that I might have Clogged Cats!  That's right, my car could not boost because there was no exhaust flow.  Dave was handy with a grinder to get through some rusted bolts, and by pounding the snot (quite literally) out of the clogged cats, the car is breathing easy and boosting like hell!  Maybe a little too much, as I am getting some overboost/cut out, but at least I can hold highway speeds and more up the mountain passes (I had to put it in 2nd gear at 35mph up Vail Pass and toward the Eisenhower tunnel to get to his place today, very embarrassing!)  Was cruising effortlessly up them at 85 on the way home.

So, once again, many thanks to all......now to see what this overboost/cut-out is all about.  Rather have too much, than none at all!
