Jim,

When you turn your key the CEL light ( MIL) should illuminate, if it doesn't it's an indicator of a problem which 
I believe is a blown ECU fuse.  

One likely cause is one of the wires to your coils has worn through and started intermittently arcing to ground.
This could explain why your car's start stumbling, and gradually got worse. As the wire arced more the
car stumbled more.
