[s-cars] Winter weight oil recommendations, temporarily seized brake caliper.....

Cough.... Well since you brought it up. This has nothing to do with 'viscosity breakdown' IMO. Most 0w,5w and 10w oils at temps of-5 have the same pumping stress (energy required to overcome viscosity). Since the OP used a 0W-40 synthetic, his oil choice pumping stress is the lowest available on the market. Rephrased: If indeed this is a pumping stress problem, any change to the weight of the oil from a 0W-xx will only increase that problem in cold weather climes.

Not sure how one comes up with a CPS problem from the post, so you could be 'right', I just have doubts how you got there. Me, I live in Chicago, and whenever I heard this problem, my first suspect would be the battery/electrical system, Larry L proposes. CCA problem.

Considering that viscosity breakdown in oil generally results in the oil
getting thinner, you don't have to worry about it getting thicker.

I doubt that 0W40 oil is going to cause issues for you, that's pretty thin
stuff. With an AAN, I would look at electrical connections being corroded
or a failing CPS. I'm sure Scott will
correct me if I'm wrong.
