Dave is spot on.
Happened to my car. I caught it time to not ruin the head from this trauma, but the other common issue is when you get the head off to "rebuild it while your in there" is the cracks in the valve seats that make the head not rebuildable.
Used "non-cracked" donors are getting really hard to find.
Good luck.

Alex,
Any time I hear about misfires on #4 or 5... especially if it occurs at idle
hen ignition components are not heavily taxed... I believe it is wise to do a
uick compression check.
These engines have the tendency to blow the head gasket between cylinders 4 and
... and it can sound like a misfire, and oftentimes it can sound like
etonation (pinging).
If that is the problem, you risk the real possibility of doing extreme damage
hile you chase around other possible problems.
In other words, I would strongly encourage you to do a quick compression check
OON. You're looking for low readings across both 4 and 5, which would indicate
 gasket failure between those cylinders.
If you are unfortunate and this is the issue, you risk trashing your cylinder
ead and your #5 piston in very short order. I've seen it many times, and I've
ad it on my own car.
I hope I'm wrong, but you should eliminate this possibility ASAP.
Good luck,
ave

i Fred,
The no.4 cylinder is the one that has the poor exhaust path and reaches a
igher temperature than the others. I had a No.4 failure. What I have
oticed with the 2.0T coils (I now have the Apikol kit) is the heating of
he metal shroud of the No.4 cylinder coil - it has turned light brown.
Maybe time for a RS2 EM!
Cheers,
Tony

Alex;
It's could be a failing coil pack. When it's misfiring at idle, pull the
njector connectors off one at a time to find the faulty cylinder - the
njector connector that doesn't result in a change in idle speed is the
ylinder that is at fault. I've replaced 4 coil packs now and this is how
hey've failed - a progressively worsening misfire. In my case I've had 3
ailures on the No.4 pack and one on the No.5 pack - kind of an odd pattern.

Hi S-Heads,

have a 1995.5 S6 with 149k with an MTM Stage 1+ chip that has a misfire
nd I was wondering if any of you might have experienced similar issues
nd know of the resolution?

he misfire occurs at idle once the car has warmed up, but not when it's
old. It also hesitates from a standing start and mildly bucks as it
isfires. Under full throttle the misfire comes in and out. Thereafter, the
isfire occurs under anything from about 25% throttle ore more. Also, the
roblem is getting worse and worse to the point that I know have to rev the
ar much higher in the rev range when changing gears so that it doesn't buck
s I accelerate again in the next gear from lower RPMs.

he car has a very recent timing belt, new spark plugs, and water pump.

've replaced both ignition modules which helped for a very short while, but
idn't eliminate the problem entirely and it's now back to where it was
efore the new modules.

've pulled the coil plate and watched all the spark plugs fire in sequence
ithout a problem.

hecked for voltage at the white power plugs for the coils (sorry if I'm
sing the incorrect terminology) and it's as it's supposed to be.

've tried to do an OHM test, but couldn't quite get that to work out.

ny input would be greatly appreciated.

hanks,

lex
