A few things:
- Make sure you've removed the two ducts that distribute air to the driver
and passenger footwells.
- Also pull the rubber boot that connects the heater box to the channel
that distributes heat in the console.
- Under the hood, there MAY be a motor on the yellow flap (late cars had
it, early didn't) in the ducting over to the A/C evaporator. If you have a
yellow flap, you almost certainly need to pull the cover on the associated
servo and remove the servo- the heater box won't clear it until you do.
- Make sure the heater hoses are clear- I pull them back most of the way
into the engine compartment through the cowl so they'll be out of the way.
Once all that's done, you should be able to pry it up and out easily enough,
HTH-
