I've never had to resort to Fred's puller - but then none of the cars that I have worked on had the heater boxes sealed to the firewall with butyl tape or silicone.
My advice is to make sure that you have first disconnected the ducting under the dash completely, then gently pry around the edge of the heater box where it meets the firewall.
You might need to get a retractable knife blade inserted to cut away some of the seal. Once you get the box to start pulling away, keep gently pulling the box away from the firewall until it releases.
I have used a nail puller/pry bar in the past to help.
