Paul: Like you say it might be engine related. Could be POS or coil or plugs or..or...or.

You might start with this missing and hesitation diagnostic (note the various hyperlinks it contains):

If the shop pulled the codes or VAG-com'd the ECU with the engine off, it will have come up with the G28
engine speed sensor "failure" code. Not to panic. That code comes up everytime when pulling codes on a
non-running engine.

•2111 (Blink Fault Code), 00513 VAG1551/2 Fault Code Number
 RPM sensor (G28)
 Open or short circuit, sensor malfunction
 Defective sensor & cables, metal fragments on flywheel teeth
 Symptom: Engine will not start, misfires, may stop running
