[s-cars] Electric Fan not working.....update

OK... glad you tried that and eliminated the fan and most of the wiring.

Me... I'd test the relay next. You indicated that there were 2 relays that said something about fans in your panel. Did the fan run when you jumped each of them, or only one of them?

Assuming it ran when you jumped either one of them, I would swap those 2 relays, as it would be an extraordinary event for both to fail at the same time.

At this point, you're down to either a bad relay, or whatever provides the relay with the signal to close the circuit. Swapping the relays and running it, you could find that the fan operates. Test it... but be careful not to get things too hot during your test. If it fails to run, you can always jump the relay again to cool it back down.

The sad part is that it's been so long since I've worked on the UrS, that I can't tell you specifically what triggers each relay. We would need a wiring diagram to determine that, or someone else on the list that is more current on their knowledge.

Good luck,
Dave

Thanks Dave,

Fan runs when jumping the relay terminals......and seems to run smooth and free of excess noise or vibration.....

Soooo, what now?

Thanks for the diagnosis help, for sure!

Best regards,

Jim

Make sure your key is on for these tests.

You need to jump the relays. If no fan, then you need to test for power at the fan itself... see if power is even getting there.

If you jump the relay AND get power down by the fan, your fan is shot.

You can also try jumping hot straight to your fan to see if it will run at all.

Thanks Dave,

I figured out what you were saying, and jumped both #214 relays like you said. Nothin.....

Now what?

Thanks! Jim

Please try jumping your fan relays. You could spend a lot of wasted time chasing all the other stuff.

All you need to do is locate the 30 and 87 terminals on the relay... jump the 2 prongs with a short piece of wire... see what happens. Even if you jump the incorrect relay, you're not in danger of doing any damage... just make sure you get the correct 2 pins... 30 and 87.

Thanks to all who have chimed in......here's what I've got so far.

1. 60A blade fuse.....Okay
2. Jumped the Thermo switch sensor wires under the intake manifold above the
power steering pump.....Nothin'
3. Jumped the connections on the Multi-Temp sensor on the radiator per SJM's
site.....Nothin'

Going to take the headlight out and check the connection behind there out
tonight. Have not been able to get power directly to the fan yet....I'll try
that as well.

Not sure which relays under the hood fuse panel are which.....there are two
identical #214 in slots 1 and 2. There is a #217 in slot 3. All say something
about the Radiator fan. Dave had mentioned something about jumping terminals in
the relay, Dave if you could be more specific or guide me to a relevant link
that tells me what terminals are where, on which relay, I'd really appreciate
it. (I don't have a Bentley). Thanks!

Not having a choice, I have been driving the car to and from work, 20 miles each
way, mix of Interstate and country road, and the CC display has read nothing
higher than 77C so far.....living on borrowed time I know, so hopefully can get
to the bottom of it this weekend.

Thanks all.....hope to get to it after work tonight.

Best regards,

Jim Fleischer
