[s-cars] replacement cats

As far as the rules go, I could care less. If I'm doing something that keeps the car running to it's proper emissions spec, that is good enough for me.
That said, the point that the cats may not be bad is a good one. I haven't heard any rattling, and spool seems normal. The engine is stock with the exception of EFI express LS series coils and a Lehmann Stage 1 ecu. If my old school Audi memory serves me, that is a conservative tune known to run pretty rich, so I suppose an occasional minor odor may not be too surprising. I'll try to pay more attention to when the odor occurs, and see if I can come up with some correlation to another condition (hard running, long idle, whatever).
Thank you!
Erik

Oh Well… screw the EPA. Keep it private and nobody knows that they aren’t the original CATs.
YMMV
It’s a personal choice. I’m out of this one.

Just read the document… I don’t believe it pertains to this transaction.
Title is:
"WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT USING, INSTALLING, ORBUYING AFTERMARKET CATALYTIC CONVERTERS"
If these are OE Cats, this is NOT illegal from what I am reading.

Here is a document from the EPA on the subject. It's a bit of a tough read, but the info is there.

Personally I'm not opposed to what was going to happen here, I merely intended to inform the relevant parties. I wouldn't have an issue making such a transaction with the appropriate amount of discretion with a trusted party.

Incorrect, it is a federal offense to sell a used cat other than to a licensed scrap center.

That is a California restriction on reuse of cats. AFAIK no other state has such a restriction.

Occasionally, I get a whiff of odor from the exhaust that thinks the cat may need to be replaced. I would love to go full stromung, but I don't see myself keeping this car more than another year or two so I can't justify it. Any economical solutions to this issue? Besides just gutting the cat (I only drive about 3-4k/yr, but that still seems uncool).
