If the hood is in the way, perhaps you could just raise it higher with a suitable prop rod. Watch out for the wipers.

Be sure to replace the fan motor as well as the flap servo when you're in there, you don't want to go back. I did the essentially same job on my type 44. Took about 10 hrs. In retrospect, it'd be much easier if you have the ability to remove the hood.
