[s-cars] 2000 A6 Quattro

I also am an ex allroad auto owner. The Auto went out on me twice (stock
power) and cost over $5,000 to fix the first time, the second time I just
dumped the car. Even when it worked it had some very annoying lag. Also
the multi-link suspension is great, but it has a lot of control arms with
permanent bushings. Keeping the suspension up can get expensive. The
interior was also a step or two down in quality from my URS6 or 200 20v.
The heater fan has the annoying squeak that audi owners are familiar with.

Overall I enjoyed driving the car, but could not recommend that vintage of
Audi (or Passat for that matter, had a 99) based on the quality of the
build. I consider those Audi's dark years in terms of quality.

Hi Gary,

In addition to what others have already mentioned... I'd also pay attention
to those things that are unique to all A6's of that vintage:

1. Info center in the gauge cluster - those tend to have failing pixels and
not a cheap fix (replacing the cluster if I recall - ours was done under
warranty), though I know in the UK there's a company that will fix these
pretty reasonably, but I don't know about here in the states.
2. Have the suspension checked out - the control arms can be noisy and often
fail inspection (at least hear in VT). Not exceptionally hard to replace,
but something to be aware of.
3. Check all electronics. We've had the windows and door locks fail on the
rear doors - and hear it's quite common. Same goes for the sunroof.
4. At 84k and at that price, I'd be suspicious of the timing belt and water
pump. It may be original. If it hasn't been replaced, plan on doing so right
away.
5. the door mirror control is in a lousy place - it's been known to be weak
and break.

Other than that - for $2k it's a lot of car for the money.

I'm going to check out a 2001 A6 quattro with a 2.7 bi turbo. Odometer
reading is one hundred and eighty four thousand miles, automatic
transmission. The ad says the car is fully loaded, new tires and needs
pads and rotors. Price is $2,000 on Any thoughts on what I should look for
or what problems are common on this vehicle.
