Echoing what everyone else said. My dad sold his 2001 A6 2.7T last summer for a 2015 A3 TDI. Very well kept, garaged, etc. The dash pixels were fading, control arms had been done a year or so ago and rear main seal was leaking, then I borrowed the car and under full throttle ( pulling away from a toll booth) the tranny was starting to slip. I told him he should think about getting it replaced. Would have never noticed the tranny issue if I had never borrowed the car.
Side story on the sale of the A6... He went to the dealership and they had the certified TDI. They took my dad's A6 to check out for trade in. My dad has hearing aids and saw the sales and service guy talking. He cranked up the hearing aids and heard the whole convo. "Man, that car is super clean and in really good condition, don't let the customer know that". My dad just smiled and got a chuckle out of it.

I'm going to check out a 2001 A6 quattro with a 2.7 bi turbo. Odometer reading is one hundred and eighty four thousand miles, automatic transmission. The ad says the car is fully loaded, new tires and needs pads and rotors. Price is $2,000 on Any thoughts on what I should look for or what problems are common on this vehicle.
