[s-cars] Battery vent required?

Batteries produce hydrogen gas when charging. Underhood, no big deal, the gas dissipates into the environment. In a closed car interior (such as the C4) or trunk (NA Miata, some Bimmer's) the gas can build up to at least dangerous proportions. Ever see a charging battery go 'boom'?

Hence the vent to the outside.

I seem to recall in my old urquattro there was a proper vent hose in the battery box, but I’m not so sure there is one in my urS6. So, I’m wondering why the vent, and is it that important to have one with a vent? And why would the manufacturers decide a vent wasn’t necessary anymore? Sorry for all the questions, just need a battery and there are limited options here in the mountains. Thanks!
