> Is the bearing from the cast iron steering pump servicable? I've read the one from aluminium
pumps are not, but my mechanic says the cast iron pump is not also.
Both are.
The trick is to pull the trunnion off the shaft and strip the pistons, etc., out of the pump
before splitting it. You need a SERIOUS hydraulic puller.
Once it's split, treat it like it was made of eggshells - the slightest burr or scratch on the
metal-to-metal mating surfaces means disaster. The shaft slides out of the front portion
backwards - the bearing is then a doddle to replace. Reassemble the halves before replacing
the pistons, etc. Minimise the time and the number of operations performed with the pumpp
split.
The trunnion goes back on with serious heat . I usually use a set of spread feeler gauges to
protect the new bearing when I drop the trunnion onto the shaft.
I haven't had one leak since I've been doing it this way.
