Did we ever decide if the lightened flywheel, ie. 3B, is advantageous, or do we WXer's need the inertia of the heavier one ?

Yes, WX flywheel has the timing pin at 60 degrees BTDC.  The later cars (MC, 3B, AAN, ABY, etc.) all have the timing pin at 62 degrees BTDC.  The only effect of using a late flywheel with WX/WR electronics would be that the timing would be advanced by 2 degrees.

... I don't have the references here to back me up, but it has always been
my understanding that the WX and MC engines differ in the location of the
"reference" signal as measured to the actual TDC of the crankshaft ...
