I suppose you could modify the contacts on the bulb so that only one of the
two bulbs functions as a marker while both function as brake lights.
Another thing you might want to investigate is how much ground "drop" you're
getting ... you might be able to see this by looking at the marker bulbs at
night when the headlights are off and the brakes are applied ... if they
start to glow dimly it will be a sign that the ground connection is weak ...
or you can simply measure the voltage between the ground point on the plate
to the frame of the car with the lights on and brakes applied. If you
notice the dual filament holder has a lug for an independent ground wire ...
I found I did not need to use it, but if you are getting some voltage drop
in your ground wires give it a shot. Another suggestion ... ISTR seeing
dual filament bulbs that had higher wattage brake filaments ... that might
help make the difference. No matter what, in my mind there's little doubt
that the dual, dual filament brake lights are much more visible than the
single units ... I remember that drive up to ThunderHill with Mike Williams
on a foggy morning ... I wonder how close someone would have to get to see
those lights?
I too am looking to add a high-mounted third brake light ... dumpster diving
at work one day I found a rectangular clear plastic block about the right
size for a third brake light. There is a PC board attached to it that has
something like 16 bright red LEDs attached. I think this will make a fine,
quick responding brake indicator ...
