In your case I'd probably buy studded tires like the Gislaved Nordfrost 3's,
but since they're not allowed in Michigan, I only have experience with
Blizzaks, Pirelli Winter 210's and Hakka Q. I like the Q's for all-around
winter driving, but the Blizzaks are a bit better on ice. The Blizzaks are
alot more squirrely in the dry, however. Best dry pavement performance were
the Pirelli's -- but they wern't so good on ice. No experience with the
Gislaveds. Oh, I found something that my be of interest to you:

This guy translated a Swedish snow tire comparison yest and (surprise) the
two Blizzaks were disqualified (too dangerous) because of their poor dry
pavemnet performance.
Halfway down someone recapped Consumer Reports winter tire test of 2002.
