[urq] RE: urq Digest, Vol 8, Issue 17 shift linkage.

This is a weak part, I broke one
after two days at Mid-Ohio, on the way home
to DC, and had only two gears for the whole trip!

Replaced with a new shift linkage that is much
more robust (can't recall if it was for a 4000Q)
which I think was the trick!

Tight fit, and you have to do the best to duplicate the
original length so that you do not have to put it on and
off again.

i use an Apexi turbo timer ($65 ebay) and i love it.
it also does battery voltage, and air/fuel.

... are you really sure you need the complexity? If you started the fan
as
soon as the key was inserted, assuming the fan did move a lot of air, it
seems to me it would cool things down fairly quickly. With the solution
you're considering if you stay a little longer to savor the 7-Elevn
coffee
the fan might shut off and you'd have the same problem. Certainly you
don't
expect the engine and exhaust system to significantly cool in 10
minutes.

My recommendation ... power the fan circuit with a load reduction relay
that
turns on when the switch that rings the chime when the ignition key is
left
in the ignition switch. This way the fan will turn on (if needed) as
soon
as you insert the key ... and if you want the fans to run while the car
is
shut down for a few minutes you can leave a different key in the switch
(a
blank, or anything that would actuate the cover on the top of the
switch)
... then the fan would run the entire time you were out ...

Bill- I can't remember the P/N offhand, but what about the afterrun pump
relay from the later turbo cars?

Another thought....what about an intercooler mister? The benefits, I'm
thinking, could be twofold. A) you can use the mister while under boost
to
cool the IC, and B) you could mist the IC at shutdown, and while the
water
evaporates it would take heat with it, right?

Just thoughts...

Brandon

Hey guys,

Finally getting around to fix (permanently) my tranny linkage. The ball
on the selector shaft lever (#33 on ETKA diagram) on top of the tranny
came out of the bushing (#27 on same diagram) that is connected to the
linkage leading to the actual shifter. The ball went back in very
easily, however the tranny has lots of slop and I don't trust it. I'd
like to replace one, the other, or both pieces. Any advice on which to
replace and how? There is very little room to work within the tranny
tunnel, so getting the bushing out, then pressing the new one in seems
pretty difficult. Also, getting a wrench on the selector shaft lever
doesn't look all that easy, either. Any BTDT or similar tips? Thanks a
million!

Best regards,

Jim Fleischer

Dear listers,

Quite a lot of response regarding the West Side UPG this week. Thanks!
To answer Steve's question I would be up for moving the event to late
August.
Not having any childerbeasts I overlooked the back to school issues!
So, who would be in for late August (weekend of the 28th) and who would
prefer September (weekend of the 11th)?

Kind regards,

Paul.

I can do either. So regardless, count me in.

No compelling preferences here, no brood, no schooling...no class either

... funny, I'm working through this on my former 4kQ ... my wife's
brother
now has it ...

What you'll find is that after you pop the locating arm socket off the
bellhousing and remove the attachment bolt on the tranny input shaft you
can
get the linkage to drop down where it can be more easily accessed. If
you
want even more room you can pop the shifter linkage out inside the
passenger
compartment ... if you want the linkage to come out of the car, mark the
relative positions of the fore and aft spline sections of the linkage to
make sure that you can put it together the same as it was beforehand ...
then loosen the clamp to allow the parts to come apart ...

Chances are what you'll need the ball and the "shift linkage" ... i.e.
the
rod that attaches to the shift rod on the tranny. You might want to
also
look at replacing the locating arm (sorry I don't remember the
Audi-speak
names) ... it's the arm that attaches to the ball at the top of the
tranny
bellhousing ... if you replaced all three parts you would catch all the
items that wear at the transmission end of the linkage ... but at
stealership prices you're probably talking $250+ in parts ...

I will also be replacing the clutch flex hose and clutch slave while I'm
in
there ... if your clutch is squishy you may want to do this as well ...

... thanks for the consideration Paul! It sounds as though I'm the only
one
with a problem ... and 8/28 is no different than September for me ...

9/6 is the Labor Day holiday ... this might make it doable for me ...
but
nonetheless don't go out of your way for me! I will make an effort to
swing
it no matter when it finally ends up getting set ... it will give me
motivation to get the car back to running condition ...

Yeah, I'm working through my linkage problems too....the bushing on my
4kq
wore straight through. After looking at the bushing, I don't think it
can be
replaced by pushing a new one in...(could be wrong on this...). I drove
it
for a while this way and eventually bent the shift rod!!
Your best bet is to find one in the yards in good condition, but getting
them in and adjusting them correctly is the biggest PIA. I eventually
gave
up on it and had the Audi shop do the adjustment.
Steven has good advice, if your going through the trouble of fixing
the
linkage, might as well replace the slave cylinder, hose and clutch
cylinder.
They are always on ebay for cheap...

Best of luck to you..
Justin
