Oh I don't know Montego black looks good and the flares
stand out. It may have been an '84 only colour, a sort of
dark brown/black metallic.

I fully agree.
Black can hide the flares very well.
I used to have a Gobi Coupe... after a while I got used to it... now kind of miss it...
I would leave it original, not that the car itself is rare enough.
