Just in case anybody was interested in the outcome of my previous
incoherent babbling...here's some more!

The 111- part that started my confooshun is an old VW part, in fact
Jim at Stammler started having flashbacks when he helped me sort out
the mystery today.

My 4kq has the 857-711-504-D style part which is what I expected
to get the other week, and what I ordered today just to satisfy my 
curiosity.
It remains to be seen if it arrives and what it is (a cheap itch 
scratching).

And why would anybody care ??  I'm thinking that if you have the old
VW knob and you've slapped at it in the heat of a drift only to have victory
slip through your fingers....
