Only with 8" ronals, he runs them on his '86. He has G60s with
Fuchs on his red car with spacers to fill the arches.
cheers, Mike

Hmmm...Martin did have those calipers on his '83 at one point though
right?

Recently I put up a posting relaying my problems with my poor starting
WR. Several of you replied for which I am grateful.
I have no checked the following:
Wiring to the cold start valve
Wiring to the Thermo-time switch
Fuel delivery to CSV
no leaks from CSV
I changed the Thermo-time switch for one for a coupe quattro (15 degrees
for 8 seconds rather than 35 degrees for 8 seconds) It was all I had to
hand.
Now I understand from this that the one I put in will only work when it
is under 15 degrees C and then for a max of 8 seconds. Well luck for me
it was a cold day (11 degrees) so it should have worked and may well
have done but it made no difference to the starting performance.
I have since read that the auxillary air valve if staying closed will
give the same symtoms as I am getting. i,e, car won't start without foot
flat to floor. I have read how to check this but what I want to know is:
whan the valve is open, how open is it? Should you be able to see a
completely open aperture or just a 1/4 segment?
Cheers
Keith

... cleaning up my inbox I saw the message below ... didn't appear to be
any replies ...
I've looked into the knock sensor situation a bit over the years ...
love to retrofit something to my car someday ... here's what I've
learned:
One option that some have contemplated is to incorporate a Saab APC
system into the car. I haven't looked much into this myself, but I
believe there are folks who have retrofitted a system into their
turbocharged Audis. If you are interested do a web search and you will
find out more. My concern about this alternative is that the spark
timing is controlled by the ECU ... it isn't clear to me whether or not
there would be any interaction between the two systems.
My original plan was to see if I could retrofit a control system from an
MC engine (MAC-11 or MAC-13) to the WX. It should be possible to do
either, but there's the nagging question about whether or not the knock
sensor(s) will operate properly if not attached to the block in the
factory way ... based on that concern I have pretty much concluded that
if you want to have knock sensing capability you might as well swap in
an MC engine. I'm thinking MC-II myself ... you get dual knock sensors
and slightly higher static compression.
The thing I really like about Audi's knock regulation mechanism is that
it will first retard the spark, but if that doesn't work it will open up
the WGFV (wastegate frequency valve) which will reduce the maximum
amount of boost that is applied to the intake manifold ...
... all that said ... it should be possible to connect up the
electronics from an MC engine to a WX ... just be careful to make sure
that you have the proper reference pin location for the MC.
... depending upon how wacky you want to get, there are other
alternatives to "classical" knock detection that could be used on a WX
engine without any modifications. There is a fairly modern system
called ION sensing ... this actually looks at the ionization signal in
the combustion chamber by observing the spark plug signal after the
charge is ignited. I would love to have a system like this to use for
my car ... probably set up with a full-on EFI system ... I've been a bit
out of the loop for a while on what might be available here ... if you
are interested check out diy-efi.org or do a general web search on ION
sensing ignition systems ...

Somebody said "light and strong" but I just thought I'd add, since no
one
else has, that part of the attraction of the Fuchs wheels is that
they're
forged, like the Fuchs wheels that were used on 911s for about 20 years.
This gives them their attractive strength-to-weight ratio.
Unfortunately,
they're only 7" wide, and a little outdated for summer tires, but still
very
useful for rally or winter tires, or The Look (or an upgrade from 6"
R8s).
If the ebay wheels were $75 for a set, that sounds incredibly cheap!

John,
That was me. I (maybe incorrectly) assumed everyone knew they were
forged
(the reason they're so light and strong). They were also never an
option on
the Urq here in the states, but were only available as an option on
later
5ktq cars in the US. Due to their design, snow/ice doesn't tend to get
stuck and cause imbalances like the regular ronal wheels. Agreed, great
choice for winter driving especially.

I've heard mention of trying to get some urqs together at Pikes Peak
June 25th. Steve Eiche posted that to the AW urq forum.
Also, the East Side UPG event may be at Carlisle, PA, the weekend of
May 21, 22nd. That coincides with a huge import swap meet there, and the
NSU and DKW clubs will be there as well. This is not to say that we
won't be at Felixs' again next year. All of this is still in the
planning stages, but it would be great if urq owners that are close to
Carlisle, PA can attend.
