[urq] Ronal R8 weights, 8x15" and other brake comments

Martin: I have a complete set of unmounted
8x15's, I will put one on a scale this weekend
for you. As far as brake improvement...there
are probably some better tricks available than
the G60 which my urq used.

It seems the urq and the A4 are similar
caliper dimensions, but no one has reported
such a conversion. If this is the case, then
skip the A4 brakes (we replaced them in our A4 race
car), and go directly to a Brembo (Porsche) upgrade.

Save unsprung weight and go to a Boxster (non S) caliper
which uses 25 mm rotors, is 4 piston and
gives much better pad life and pedal modulation.

You would be amazed at the improved race car performance,
even though some swept area is lost (on radius closest
to axle where it makes little difference) we can brake
much deeper into corners without inducing ABS thru better
modulation, and the pads where perfectly "square" so our
$175 Hawk Blues last for 3-4 races, rather than just 2!

The trick is to find something that will work on your
15" rims. The only thing we found and are using
on our 20V Urq conversion is a set of heavy
4 piston AP calipers (original SQ) which allow
15" rims to be used. I will research and develop
a better solution next year, with a new caliper
bracket, and mix-and-match Brembo calipers, and
then try to figure out if an A4 aluminum hat
rotor like ECS offers will work which would be
awesome for weight savings and improved ventilation.

Having said that, from a performance standpoint,
the 8" Ronals, which some feel are the most
beautiful (and OEM) rims for the car, are really
heavy, and restrict large caliper sizing which we
really need for 400+ HP. If Performance were
the sole issue, it would be 996 calipers, and
a trick aluminum hat largest 32mm rotor we could fit
on the front with 17x8" rims (we have 35ET 17x8" Bolaros
on car) with urS4 rear vented rotors and a proportioning Valve.

btw, the special bracket for that hooks onto the master cylinder
works great where these cars break the firewall from the clutch
flexing the firewall. We first repaired the crack by reinforcing
with metal and tig welding, and painting
so it will never be a problem or be seen again.

The original MC will work, but the trick, I am told is a 91 200 Avant
MC which is a direct bolt-in and larger bore.

Phil

hitting another driver, with her head up her butt chatting on her phone,

anyone else's on the list to our satisfaction, the paint will always be

Louis-Alain has measured the standard OEM 6Jx15 wheel at 18
pounds
and my 7Jx15H2 pearl white Fuchs(447-601-025F) weighs in at 14lbs. These
are
both weights without tyres. Does anyone have an 8Jx15 OEM wheel they can
weigh
for comparison?
When I have all the brake components weighed, original and G-60,
the
results will be posted for those interested.

I've got mine boxed up with no tires mounted, I need to take care of
that.
I'll try to weigh one after work today, or maybe tomorrow if noone else
gets to it before me.

Brandon, I didn't want to say anything at the UPG to
spoil your fun, but I'm pretty sure that over the
years there are tons of accounts of reasons not to use
water-wetter. Bad testimonials. I have one myself, as
I tried it a few years ago and it took me 2 years to
get the remaining goo out of the system. I remember
people said it tends to ball up and clog little
cooling passages. I could be wrong. I'd do what I did,
construct some garden-hose fitting adaptors to the
upper and lower coolant hoses (use PVC and ABS plastic
pipe to adapt), remove the thermostat, and backflsuh
and forward flush in succession, using hot water.

I second Tony's kudos to Paul and Pauline. Thanks so
much for organizing the UPG meeting. Worth every
mind-numbing mile through northern Nevada!

Thanks to Tony for the convoy partner. Made the drive
a little less stressful in case of break-down.

Hey guys,

Finally got my head (WX) back from the shop. I noticed after I had
picked
it up though that they had not removed the old injector inserts. I
tried
with a pair of pliers to pull them out but they just cracked off (at
least
the short lip on the top did). Should I fashion some sort of hook
device to
pull these out or try to cut them out with a good utility knife? Just
looking for any BTDT from the list.

I know, it's been discussed before, but I couldn't find anything recent.
This is for my '84 Urq running a bit extra boost with the WX motor. Is
the general consensus to replace with OEM or is there a Silicone
alternative that fits/works well. 2 large bills ain't cheap, ya know...

If I am right, these inserts are screwed into the head assembly.
You will need a 12mm (not sure about the size...) allen key to remove
them.
