[urq] walkabouts in convoy

Hey guys, at the UPG many of you all had walkabout type radios, I was  
shopping for some but I had a few questions.
 
Do all of the brands use the same range of channels?  Can all of the  brands 
talk to eachother?
 
Has anyone had better luck with different brands etc?  How about the  
advertised range on these, are they pretty true to the distance they  claim?
