Interesting that messing with the distributor made a noticeable 
difference... sounds like a clue (?) to an intermittent electro-mechanical 
issue there.  Sorry if I'm emphasizing the obvious -- just taking a shot...

I checked the resistance of the rotor ... I really seem to have pissed it 
off
now.  Had a tough time getting it started and managed to generate a
hair-raising backfire in the process.
